ABSTRACT

In this study, mosquito repellent patches using ethanolic leaf extract and essential oil from the Balakat tree (Ziziphus talanai) combined with varying proportions of PVP polymer to optimize efficacy and compliance was formulated and evaluated. This study seeks to identify the optimal concentration of ingredients to create a potent and user-friendly repellent patch. Organoleptic properties and acceptability, folding durability, moisture content, and pH of the patches were evaluated. Mosquito repellency evaluation was calculated and analyzed with the used of modified excito chamber. Despite variations in texture, color, odor, and shape, overall user acceptability remained high across treatments. Physicochemical tests showed high folding resistance (>300 folds), increased moisture content with higher PVP concentrations, and stable pH around 6. PVP and PVA ratio significantly influenced patch characteristics, including folding resistance, moisture content, and pH. Mosquito repellency revealed tests that the optimal repellency observed in patches contains 10.5% PVP for both Balakat ethanolic leaf extract and essential oil, as confirmed by statistical analysis. The Statistical analysis demonstrated significant differences in mosquito repellency rates among patches with different PVP concentrations, particularly within the Balakat ethanolic leaf extract and essential oil groups. The findings indicate that PVP concentrations (7%, 10.5%, and 14%) significantly affect the repellency effectiveness of the formulated patches. Optimizing future formulations with 10.5% PVP for balanced texture, moisture content, and repellency, neutralizing unpleasant odors, standardizing patch color, and exploring combinations of Balakat extracts with other repellents to enhance efficacy is recommended for future researches.
