Abstract


Ziziphus talanai commonly known as the “Balacat tree” is endemic in the Philippines which is rich in secondary metabolites such as flavonoids and tannins that embark some histoprotective and reproprotective potentials. Even so, there is no study about the histoprotective and reproprotective potentials of the plant on the reproductive architectures of female mice. Thus, this study focuses on the histological analysis of Z. talanai on the reproductive architectures of female ICR mice MSG-induced toxicity. A total of 21 female mice were distributed randomly among the treatments; water alone, MSG alone, L-taurine + MSG, 25% extract + MSG, 50% extract + MSG, 75% extract + MSG and 100% extract + MSG. The results revealed that there were cytoarchitectural changes among the groups. MSG alone, 25% and 100% Balakat extract showed the deleterious damages of MSG such as; degeneration of follicles, vacuolation of cells, congestion of blood vessel and presence of atretic follicles. While L-taurine, 50% and 75% Balakat extract showed an increase of growing new follicles compared to the MSG alone and 25% Balakat extract group and none to minimal vacuolation and atretic follicles. Conclusively, the secondary metabolites such as flavonoids present in Z. talanai possessed histoprotective and reproprotective potential against MSG-induced toxicity.
