Heart failure has become a prevalent condition for the past years, and preceding this is the manifestation of cardiac hypertrophy that is caused by an increased workload of the heart which can be due to oxidative stress. Various studies on the antioxidant potential of Balakat tree (Ziziphus talanai (Blanco) Merrill) have been documented and these reinforce its exerted effect for histoprotection. The study utilized ethanolic leaf extract of Balakat tree in two dosages (2000 mg/kg and 4000 mg/kg) plus MSG (8mg/g) for the treatment groups, the negative control with 8mg/g of Monosodium glutamate, and the positive control with Ascorbic acid (500mg/kg) plus MSG. Mice body weight are shown to be increasing albeit in small increments per day and significantly at the end of the week. Significant increase of the weight of the heart is observed between the treatment administered with extract alone and the group with MSG alone. Preservation of the overall cardiac morphology is observed for the treatment groups that is pronounced on the lower dosage. However, the higher dosage imparted damage to cardiac histology, similar to the MSG treated group. These aspects demonstrate the protection of cardiac histology facilitated by the Balakat tree ethanolic leaf extract. Further studies are hereby recommended to fortify the histoprotective activity of the extract on cardiac histoarchitecture.
