Abstract
Plants are treasures of phytochemicals which are useful in treating most human diseases and ailments, and plant medicines contain variety of substances and therefore act via different pathways. This study aimed to determine the anti-bacterial potential and cytotoxicity evaluation of bark extracts using different solvent systems. The anti-bacterial activity was determined using disc diffusion method against two pathogenic strains which are Staphylococcus Aureus and Escherichia Coli, the zone of inhibition, Aqueous bark extract with 10mm, Ethanol bark extract with 18.86mm and 100% and 50% concentrations, and methanol bark extract with 13.81mm and 100% and 50% concentrations. It was observed that balakat bark extract using different solvent systems has an anti-bacterial activity against gram positive and gram negative bacteria. Brine shrimp lethality assay used was to determine cytotoxicity evaluations of bark extract using different solvent systems in which all the extracts of different dosages (1000ppm, 100ppm, 10pp, 1ppm) of bark extract exhibit no toxic effect to the naupili within 24 hours of exposure to the different extracts regardless of the concentration (50% and 100%). Therefore, the bark extract of balakat tree (Ziziphus talanai) using different solvent systems has an anti-bacterial property because of the secondary metabolites that are present in bark which are not toxic to the cell.
