ABSTRACT
Helminths infections are experienced worldwide and are recognized as the cause of much acute as well as chronic illness among humans. Helminthes develop anthelmintic resistance which then led to the search for potential alternatives. This study proposed screening medicinal plants for their anthelmintic activity. Preliminary phytochemical screening of the ethanol leaf extract of Balakat tree (Ziziphus talanai (Blanco) Merr.), revealed the presence of bioactive compounds in the ethanol and aqueous leaf extract of Ziziphus talanai such as essential oils, tripertenes, steroids, tannins, alkaloids, anthraquiones, anthrones, flavonoids, steroids, and and coumarines. The study employed 24 earthworms distributed into 8 groups with 3 earthworms each. T- suspended in distilled water alone; T+ suspended in albendazole (10 mg/ml); T1 suspended in ethanol leaf extract (25mg / m * 1) ; T2 suspended in ethanol leaf extract (50mg / m * l) ; T3 suspended in ethanol leaf extract (100mg / m * l) ; T4 suspended in aqueous leaf extract (25mg / m * 1) ; T5 suspended in aqueous leaf extract (50mg / m * 1) ; T6 suspended in aqueous leaf extract (100mg / m * l) . In terms of time of paralysis, the aqueous leaf extract is potent in inducing paralysis whereas the ethanol leaf extract is potent in bringing death to the test organism. It can be stated that ethanol and aqueous leaf extract of Ziziphus talanai possesses anthelmintic activity and was comparable to the standard drug albendazole.
