Abstract

Renal dysfunction antibiotic drugs. antibiotic, is used However, can due develop Gentamicin, and to various aminoglycoside against gram-negative bacteria. this antibiotic can induce lipid peroxidation increasing the synthesis of free radicals and decreasing antioxidants leading to kidney failure. Thus, there is a necessity to address renal dysfunction. There are anecdotal claims at Antique, Philippines, that an endemic species of Ziziphus, Ziziphus talanai (Balakat tree), has been used as traditional medicine to treat kidney problems. Phytochemical screening of the ethanol leaf extract of the Balakat tree revealed the presence of phytochemicals with histoprotective potentials. Twelve 6-8 week old male ICR mice were divided into four groups with three replicates for each. Treatments were administered for 18 days. Gentamicin was administered via intra-peritoneal injection. Water, leaf extract and garlic supplement were introduced via oral gavage. To is normal control treated only with 1ml/20g body weight (bw) distilled water. T- is negative control treated only with 0.01ml/ 20g bw gentamicin. T+ is positive control treated only with 0.2ml/ 20g bw garlic supplement. T1 received 0.3m1/20 g bw ethanol leaf extract of Balakat tree and after 1 hour, T1 was gentamicin. treated with 0.01ml/20 g bw
Blood serum analysis including creatinine and BUN showed that To had normal levels; T- was significantly increased; T+ was at equilibrium; and T1 was significantly decreased. Histopathological examination revealed that TO had intact glomerulus and renal normal tubules; T-exhibited hyaline cast formation, intertubular hemorrhage, renal tubular desquamation and mononuclear cell permeation and: T+ had intact glomerulus and normal renal tubules; T1 had intact glomerulus, moderate intertubuluar hemorrhage and normal renal tubules. Therefore, the ethanolic leaf extract of Balakat tree exhibited mild potential as a nephroprotective agent at the single dosage used (0.3m1/20g bw). Further recommended. studies involving higher doses are
